Tunnel boring machines (TBM), or tunneling machines, are specialized equipment designed for efficient and precise tunnel excavation. They can bore tunnels of considerable diameters, ranging from a few meters to over 15 meters, minimizing surface disturbance. Their use has revolutionized tunnel construction, allowing for greater speed, safety, and cost-effectiveness compared to traditional methods.
Tunnel boring machines are primarily made of high-strength steel and feature components such as tungsten carbide-coated cutting discs to drill through soil and rock. Additionally, they may include support and lining systems made of resilient materials to stabilize tunnels during excavation.
