Transversal reinforcement in the lap zone

Transversal reinforcement is required in the lap zone to resist the transverse tension forces. When the diameter is equal or higher than 20mm or the lapped bars in any section is more or equal than 25%, transverse reinforcement is needed.

This transverse reinforcement should be provided at the outer sections of the lap as presented in the picture, in the 1/3 of the overlap length.

In addition, for bars in compressionm the transverse reinforcement should be placed outside each end of the lap length and within a distance equal to 4 diameters of the ends of the lap lenght as presented in the figure below.
