Material Grades. An excellent demonstration of soil sizes. Useful for civil engineers!

Ordered list from smallest to largest particle size:

1. Clay: Smaller particles, with diameters less than 0.002 mm. It is plastic and retains a lot of water.

2. Silt: Small particles, with diameters between 0.002 mm and 0.05 mm. Retains water and nutrients.

3. Sand: Medium-sized particles, with diameters between 0.05 mm and 2 mm. Provides good drainage capacity.

4. Gravel and Pebbles: Larger particles, with diameters ranging from millimeters to several centimeters. Used in construction for road bases and drainage.

5. Boulders and Large Rocks: Fragments even larger than gravel, with sizes of several centimeters or more. Considered in planning and foundations in construction projects.

6. Large Rock Fragments: Can be even larger than a meter and will impact design and construction in rocky terrain.

7. Organic Material: Remnants of plants and vegetation in the soil.

8. Massive Cohesive Material: Large masses of cohesive rock, especially in special projects.
