Corbels - Secondary reinforcement following EC-2 (1992-1-1 AnnexJ.3)

The following image illustrates how secondary reinforcement behaves in cantilevers under concentrated loads near the support based on the distance from the support. According to EC-2 (1992-1) Annex J.3, depending on this distance, av, it is necessary to provide horizontal reinforcement alone or in combination with vertical reinforcement.

As can be seen, in the calculated example, for distances from av=0.25m (av/h=0.25) up to av=0.60m (av/h=0.60), only longitudinal reinforcement is required. This aligns closely with the EC-2s provisions. The EC-2 suggests that for av/h values greater than 0.5, it is necessary to add vertical stirrups, whereas in our calculation, these are needed for av/h values greater than 0.6. The EC-2 approach appears to be conservative.
