A geological age is a formal geochronological unit of the geological time scale that represents the time corresponding to the duration of an eratema, the equivalent chronostratigraphic unit that comprises all the rocks formed at that time. The eras are one of the major divisions of geological time, they are subdivisions of the eons and they are divided in turn into periods.
The Paleozoic represents the "age of fish", the Mesozoic the "era of reptiles" and the Cenozoic the "era of mammals."
